"Hoping Mary" by Greg Pittman
A Colored Blind Perspective on Facebook
MARY
- A MUSICAL is the story of one woman's struggle toward love in spite
of her own defenses.
Although she has survived an abusive childhood by
embracing suspicion and isolation,
Mary discovers peace -- and power --
by learning to choose
trust, vulnerability, and community.
MARY
- A MUSICAL was a finalist in the 2010 Eugene O'Neill NMTC Summer Workshop
considerations. Based on the life of Mary Magdalene, the show avoids
evangelism, focusing
instead on how a life defined by hate opens up
cautiously to become a life defined by deep
love and real joy. The songs
are powerful, moving -- and at times hilarious. The characters are
familiar, yet surprising. The story is timeless...but still current to
anyone who has ever been
hurt and become afraid to love.

Mazel tov! Such
an amazing piece of work! Thank you for inviting me. I actually welled up a few
times
(whodathunk?...a Jew crying over Mary Magdalene...it's meshuggenah!...)
...a perfectly lovely experience...wonderful music.
My cousin and I were both so impressed…
you have written a
beautiful love story that captured me and moved me deeply.
The characters of
Mary and Jesus are wonderfully drawn.
I liked the way you wove in the Hebraic
melodies at times. Your cast was great, all of them.
There was something so
human and beautiful about Mary, and Jesus was sensitive and inspiring and
humble and beautiful too.
The emotions really gelled toward the end;
I don't usually get choked
up at something like that, but I did a little yesterday.
"Fly Little
Bird"…made me cry and touched me so!...a beautiful piece of work.
…a lovely, moving piece… cast was AMAZING…
[music director] Matt
[Castle]'s gorgeous handling of the score…and [director] Frank [Galgano]'s directing
choices
served the material so well that I know they played a part in why I got
choked up at least twice...
Your piece is truly magnificent and I am so happy I was at the reading.
What a masterful work!
